Who’s 24, female and horny? AdNews of course
Dr Mumbo really should know when to leave these things alone. Sadly he doesn’t.
So he’s sad to report that the latest step in AdNews’ new adventures in the digital world may not have gone as it hoped.
As well as its shiny new website. AdNews is also getting serious about tweeting. You can tell that because it’s targeting some of those in Australia with big followings and ordering them to follow their account in what some (but not Dr Mumbo, of course) might consider a spammy way.
Mind you, that’s nothing to the DMs currently being sent out from the AdNews Twitter account.
It looks like it’s fallen foul of a hacker, or at least one assumes so, as Dr Mumbo’s tipster forwards him the following message they received from AdNews this morning. Apparently AdNews is both female and horny:
Of course, Dr Mumbo now opens himself up to 17 kinds of schadenfreude if the @Mumbrella Twitter account is ever hacked. In that circumstance, he offers one piece of advice to keen astroturfers: remember to disguise your IP address next time. It’s not that hard.
Brilliant! What an excellent example of how to cheapen an offering and undermine the premise of Twitter all in one go.

You think the AdNews twits were the first to do this Gual??

They’ve posted an apology now

It seems very appropriate that their Twitter got hacked last night and you post a story bagging them at 9am… Coincidence?

Thanks for your question, ‘PR genius’, (and well done on hiding the IP – you are learning slowly).
If you’re asking if I somehow hacked the AdNews Twitter account so I could write a mean story the next day, then to answer your question, no, that’s not the case, although it is a brilliantly paranoid question.
Your (sorry, AdNews’) DM was forwarded to me by someone at 7.13 this morning.
Your (sorry, AdNews’) general tweet this morning: “Apologies to everyone who received a dm from the ‘genius’ who decided to hack our Twitter last night…” suggests a slight misunderstanding how these things work.
In all likelihood you (sorry, AdNews) naively signed into a spammy Twitter application whcih harvested your (sorry, their) details.
If it’s any consolation, you’re not alone, I’ve since had DMs with the same ‘horny’ message from five other people. There’s a lot of it about today.
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
Anonymous Coward, no I am not suggesting they are the first. But as trade press which in essence should be a guiding light for the industry to get something like this SO wrong is pretty daft. No?

To be perfectly honest I suspect close to 80% of everyone pushing social media and marketing are getting it wrong.
Classic example, people host discussion threads on their sites and then monitor their users IP addresses so they can look them up and throw it back at their face…..wait a minute…..
Got to ask Mumbrella, do you stalk exes as well?

I don’t actually like these kind of stories, slagging off other industry news publishers. I like to read AdNews and Mumbrella, but this kind of story just seems a little petty.
If you’re going to report on AdNews or any of your other competitors, keep it friendly. From the opening line of this story, you DO seem to know that this is inflammatory stuff… and as a reader, I don’t dig that.

Come on Dan – the industry deserves a bit of accountability and this was done in a fair tone. It’s not slagging off; but highlighting a big stuff up.
Successful media is always about being forthright.
The fact is that this was a big stuff up and it deserves to be highlighted.
This is a problem that has affected MANY MANY people and has been in the wild for about a week now. Essentially, they got “Twflu”! 😉
To be honest, anyone is vulnerable to an attack like this – regardless of their background (media or not). I think that it is more due to the nature of twitter & sharing your user/password with so many different apps that use the api. It’s the first time twitter has been hit with such a widespread issue as far as I am aware, but I suspect that it will not be a first, nor unfortunately a last.
Just remember – a few months ago – Google/Hotmail and others were embarrassed but with EMAIL accounts being compromised.

I think we are missing the point, fellow commentators. The DM, Spam, Hot/.24 thing is well known and easily prevented (watch me get hacked now!). The problem here is that, for some inane reason, Adnews decided the best way to get traction on twitter was to form @ well known marketing and media and blogger types in Australia.
Err, guys and gals, that’s not how it works…unless you are one of those Internet Markety, Social Media Expert Gurus (SMEG).
So, in the sense of said @twitter…#fail

Breaking news: AdNews updates letterhead.
Think of the children!!
I agree with the guy above you are a stalker but you dwell in the mundane. I mean, do you go through their bins too? Ooooooo their diets are poor this week. Not enough fibre. Must write a story and expose them.
Creepy in a Naomi Robsonesque sensationalist.way.

Come on girls, no need to be bitchy about this. Adnews was hacked. Tim thought it was funny. So did I.
Who cares?

While the @mumbrella account has not been hacked it appears that perhaps your deputy editors account @mumbocam has been.
On Feb 26 a post said: hey, i’ve been having better sex and longer with this here (link) http://twitter.com/MumboCam/status/9667273156
I also received a DM saying that ‘You look funny on this blog (link)’.
I’m suprised this hasn’t been acknowledged or taken down despite mumbrella linked posts being tweeted since.

Let’s make that 18 kinds of schadenfreude…
Tee hee…
But I suppose she’d better delete it. Thanks, Caitlin…

Will AdNews pick up on this development tho’ ?

I agree with Dan, yet another cheap shot in a constant barrage of Ad News nit-picking. So they got hacked? Big deal. This pettiness reflects more on you than them.
p.s. the first time I tried to post this message, your website froze. Better do a story on that too.
