ABC poaches The Australian’s media editor Nick Leys
The Australian’s Media Editor Nick Leys has resigned to take the role of chief spinner for the ABC.
A spokesman for the ABC today confirmed the appointment of Leys who was promoted to the role of Media Editor just two weeks ago, following the departure of his predecessor Nick Tabakoff to who left to join Commonwealth Bank at the end of last year in a PR role.
It leaves the section seeking its sixth editor in five years.
Leys has been with The Australian since 2011 serving as media diarist, he is also a previous Sydney bureau chief. He has also worked for News’s tabloids The Sunday Telegraph and Herald Sun.
He replaces Sally Cray who departed the ABC in September for a role in Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s office.
The surprise appointment comes at a time of major tension between News Corp Australia, publisher of The Australian and the ABC.
Prior to working at News Corporation Leys was a journalist at The Sydney Morning Herald and has also worked as a researcher on Media Watch.

Defending the ABC will should make a nice change from channeling Chris Mitchell and frothing at the mouth about the shortcomings of the state-owned broadcaster.
Unless he’s going undercover for the Oz … working on a major expose of the ABC’s bias and lax journalism standards, which can then run in the monument to impartial reporting that is The Australian.
