‘The law is an ass’: incoming Daily Telegraph editor leaves Courier Mail with a bang
Outgoing Courier-Mail’s editor Chris Dore is going out with a bang, with an explosive front page on the Brisbane tabloid today slamming the decision to drop Gerard Baden Clay’s murder sentence to manslaughter.
During his tenure as editor Dore, who takes on the top job at the Daily Telegraph next week, has been known for his impactful and sometimes incredibly controversial splashes, leaving some big shoes to fill for his as yet unnamed successor. Here’s some of his recent hits:
Like Paul Whittaker, who he replaces at the Daily Telegraph next week, Dore has not been afraid of a bit of photoshopping from time to time. For example this front page with Russian President Vladimir Putin as a sailor ahead of the G20:
Or telling one of the world’s most powerful men to apologise for flight MH17 being shot down over the Ukraine:
And even laying into the pathetic display from the Australian batsmen during the Ashes series this winter, putting a man the paper had previously pilloried – Stuart Broad – on the cover:
And then bailing up two of the flops for going out and playing on fairground rides:
Or the hard-hitting image of the Toowoomba teenager who joined Islamic terrorists in the Middle East:
And a G20 wrap welcoming the world’s most powerful people to Brisbane:
Which got two PMs reading:
However the bent for controversial front pages has at times led the paper into trouble. For example the “lighthearted” splash about murdered school teacher Stephanie Scott:
Ot the “Monster chef and the Shemale” headline on the tale of murdered transgender woman Mayang Prasetyo which earned howls of derision:
There were certainly a couple that went too far, as pointed out at the end there, so Dore will need to be careful. But having said that, I think he will be a better fit for the Tele than Whittaker was. I think he’ll bring back that tabloid-y irreverence that the Tele was once famous for, rather then heading in the same direction as Whittaker – obsessively political, partisan and just generally hateful. Unlike Whittaker, Dore seems like the type of editor who is more concerned with his readers’ interests rather than his own, and that has been reflected in better circulation figures at the Courier Mail. But, we shall see.

Sounds like a real piece of work, typical Murdoch henchman who will know his job without many instructions from the chief.
