Rebel Wilson wins defamation case against Bauer Media
Australian actress and comic Rebel Wilson has just won a landmark defamation case against Bauer Media at the Victorian Supreme Court.
Wilson launched the action against Bauer Media – the publisher of Woman’s Day, Australian Women’s Weekly, New Weekly and OK Magazine – in May 2016, alleging she was defamed in several articles published in 2015, including a Woman’s Day story titled ‘Just who is the REAL Rebel?’

The articles alleged Wilson had lied about her age, her name and her upbringing in Australia.
Articles were also published across other Australian magazines, including Bauer’s Australian Women’s Weekly, New Weekly and OK Magazine.

Wilson sued Bauer for damages, arguing the ‘serial liar’ allegations had ruined her reputation and cost her lucrative movie roles.
A statement from Bauer said the publisher was considering its options following the verdict.
Mumbrella contacted Wilson’s lawyer Renee Enbom for comment.
Wow. Is this going to make Rebel Wilson the me of Australian media?

I don’t think Rebel Wilson cares. She is big enough overseas not to.

Congratulations Rebel. Well deserved.

Ironic how the media become “the enemy” when the stars don’t like what’s written about them, but use them for publicity, including using themselves as a “source”, when it suits them.

Didn’t the idea for these articles start at Mamamia? Seems like their week about to get a whole lot worse!

I worked for the 2nd biggest tabloid mag in Australia for for while. This result made me laugh out loud – good on you Rebel! Sitting in meeting after meeting where people discussed how much we could embellish the truth without incurring legal problems was quite an eye opener. There were certain celebs you’d be told to not stretch the truth about as they were ‘lawyer-happy’, but everyone else was fair game.

If news ltd simultaneously spruiked whirlpool dishwasher and trash talked them with mistruths they bought from Hotpoint, don’t you think whirlpool would sue? If you’re suing, do you sue the poor person or do you sue the rich enabler person? It seems pretty logical to me that a savvy i-am-a-brand name would sue media company that buys half-truths from disgruntled schoolmate, to sell the rag, even if they use the media company to sell themselves: isn’t a good working definition of a brand your good name? Don’t you fight to defend it?
