Seven dominates Friday night TV
Seven had a commanding lead on Friday night, locking in an average audience share of 22.6%, ahead of Nine’s 15.4%, Ten’s 13.3%, ABC’s 11.7% and SBS’ 5.4%.
Seven’s Friday night programming – which includes Seven News, Better Homes & Gardens and The Chase Australia – frequently sees the network’s main channel top the ratings ladder at the end of the working week.
A screening of the 2011 film starring Anthony Hopkins and Chris Hemsworth, Thor, also helped Seven with a metro audience of 426,000, according to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings.
Up against Thor at 8:30pm was The Graham Norton Show on Ten, which was ahead with 467,000 metro viewers and a repeat of Have You Been Paying Attention? – which initially screens on Monday evenings – at 9:30pm with an audience of 278,000. Over on Nine at 8:30pm, Pierce Brosnan’s 1999 Bond film The World Is Not Enough, had 255,000 metro viewers. The ABC’s Endeavour had 487,000.
In the metro breakfast battle, Seven’s Sunrise also had a commanding lead over Nine’s Today – 297,000 compared to 258,000. In the earlier hours of the shows’ broadcast, Today was very slightly ahead – 170,000 versus 169,000.
Once regional numbers were added to the mix – including broadcast on affiliate stations – Seven maintained its dominance. Seven News had a national audience of 1.367m, closely followed by its second half hour (which is broadcast as Today Tonight in some states) which had 1.275m. Better Homes & Gardens ranked third nationally with 1.159m. No other shows topped the one million viewers mark.
