Mumbrella360 to support drive to attract students into comms industry
Mumbrella is to run a free programme for students interested in entering the communications industry, as part of this year’s Mumbrella360 conference.
Sponsored and curated by Group M, the one day programme will focus on educating students on career options within media.
Group M is seeking to reach out to students beyond those doing traditional marketing and media degrees, including to those with data and analytical skills. They will hear from a series of some of the most senior WPP staff in Australia about all aspects of the industry.
Students in the final year of degrees, or in the first year of a job in the non-media part of the industry considering a career change, can apply for the free places by logging on to the Mumbrella360 booking page and adding the code: STUDENT360
As well as having access to Mumbrella360’s morning keynote interview with CommBank CMO Andy Lark, the students will also rejoin the room at the end of the day for Mumbrella Question Time and the final of Battle of the Media.
According to the draft programme, the day will be chaired by James Greet, CEO of MindShare.
Russel Howcroft, CEO of Y&R Brands and Gruen Transfer panelist, will discuss the history of advertising.
A further session will cover career opportunities and training within the communications industry before Melissa Fein, head of MindShare’s branded content offering ESP, and MindShare’s director of co-creation Sam Turley present on how brands and content work together.
The afternoon sees Maxus head of digital Tom Kelshaw and head of data planning and analytics Rob Pardini explain how agencies use digital, analytics and search.
The final session will see MEC chief strategy officer James Hier and chief innovation officer Peter Grenfell explain the role of social media and targeting influencers.

John Steedman, chairman of Group M, said: “Attracting, retaining and nurturing talent has been one of GroupM’s long standing priorities as a business. Attracting the brightest graduate talent to our business is an absolute key requirement for the future health of our business and this is the reason we pressed for this session at Mumbrella360. We are hopeful, we will attract those graduates to the session who have an interest to enter our industry and more so, a GroupM agency. ”
Details of Mumbrella360 – including how to purchase tickets to the two day event – are available on the Mumbrella360 website.

Hi Duke of Norfolk,
We did reach out to the Communications Council, which represents ad agencies, but it chose not to participate.
Cheers,

Nice initiative.

Make sure you tell ’em MSM journalism pays sweet FA now. Hence the flood of experienced talent to PR, Media Relations and the O/S outfits who can still afford a buck a word.

I don’t think the problem is attracting more grads…it’s actually being able to find them a job in the rather saturated industry.

Hi Duke
Our focus in this area is our comprehensive nine month Graduate Trainee Program which involves finding, training and placing aspiring advertising talent in agencies. Our program has been running for 31 years and in January this year we placed another 54 graduates across 22 agencies. We have limited resources for sponsorships such as the one mentioned above, but we are very supportive and committed to such initiatives, as they are critical to the ongoing success of our industry.

So it’s only for final year students? Damn.
I’m in my penultimate year and would be very interested in attending. If I email do I stand a chance of securing a place?
