Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood maintains its hold at the top of the box office, earning $3.7m
Action film, Angel Has Fallen, made its box office debut over the weekend in second place, earning $1.793m across 328 screens. The film is the third in the Fallen film series, preceded by 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen, which earned $2.171m in it 2016 opening weekend.
The Gerard Butler-led film failed to topple Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which maintained its place at the top of the weekend box office. In its second weekend, the film starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie took in $3.742m from 606 screens. Despite the 44% drop from the previous weekend, the film’s total earnings have reached $12.3m.
Disney juggernaut, The Lion King, landed in third position over the weekend. In its seventh turn at the weekend box office, the reimagined version of the animated classic earned $1.47m from 399 screens. Since experiencing the fifth-highest opening weekend in Australia, The Lion King has moved in and out of top position, being beaten a three weeks ago by Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and last week’s Tarantino debut. It’s running total has now exceeded $60m.
The latest instalment in the Fast & Furious universe, Hobbs & Shaw, received $942,426 over the weekend from 256 screens, landing in fourth position. The comedy-action film has now amassed $16.879m in total earnings in Australia.
Debuting in fifth position was Chinese animated fantasy film Ne Zha. The film is based on the myth of the birth of Nezha, the deity of protection in Chinese folk religion. Ne Zha was first released in China on the 13 July 2019 and has set records in the country for box office grosses of a locally produced film.
In its Australian opening weekend, Ne Zha earned $648,339 from just 27 screens.
After opening last weekend, A Dog’s Journey dropped down to seventh, with just $445,647 in earnings from 245 screens.
