Expedia to hand Facebook page to customers for competition
Travel site Expedia is set to hand control of its Australian Facebook page to three consumers for a month, who will compete to create the most compelling content to win $10,000.
According to the site, the brand’s usual Facebook administrators will step back from February 4 to March 7. Meanwhile it’s three “interim administrators” will compete to create the best content.
According to Expedia: “All the interim administrators will have to do for the chance to win the $10K is build our community by creating and posting the most engaging Expedia-relevant content on the Expedia.com.au wall.
“The interim administrators will receive extra points for being popular, creative, displaying an innate understanding of social media and Expedia.com.au, and for creating other potentially awesome material.”
who are these 3 interim administrators and how were they selected?

Nice idea, interested to see the results.

I like the idea of users generating content but why wouldn’t Expedia make it easier to enter, or have an app within Facebook instead of e mailing entries. The tab page is uninviting and text heavy.

seriously?

Awesome concept! It’ll be interesting to see what results they can generate! The Facebook page currently has 2235 fans. Is 10k fans a realistic target?

Sounds like a lazy marketing department who cannot even build a community around their brand.

Now *THIS* is social currency!

Is this just spam evolved. Get 3 ‘social egos’ to spam their friends to try and drive traffic to expedia?
Or is it a highly sophisticated, cutting edge idea that is flying over my head?

Michael – I think achieving 2,300 fans in less than a week is a good example of building a community around a brand, don’t you?

Definitely a good way to grow your fan base as well as giving back to the community. I’d be interested to see what promotions the 3 interim administrators come up with – i will definitely be following!

Sounds like a clever marketing department that has already generated publicity just by announcing this competition.

If anyone has any questions on the results or insight/idea, we’re happy to share them once the campaign has concluded. If interested, email: karalee.evans@amnesia.com.au

I’d like to add that Expedia have been fantastic (and brave) supporting this idea. Impossible to predict the outcome of this so it’s a big move by them being their first social campaign locally.
Hopefully we can share results later although I suspect it will mostly be there on display for all to see, warts n all.

Remind me to yawn. Surely there’s a bigger idea out there than this to ignite social engagement.
Meanwhile ….What about Mumbrella throw their site out for us to run it for a few hours? It’d be fun. We could run rampant.

It’s a pretty unusual campaign – a lot of trust has to be placed in them choosing people they think will help to build (not sink) their brand! I think 10k fans by the end of the comp is a fairly reasonable target to achieve, with over 1000 per week joining the page so far – the admins just have to crank up the social-viral cycle! 😉

@Karalee
Are you one of the ‘interim administrators’?
