X to begin Kings Cross shoot in April

Viva Bianca in XThe ‘adults-only’ thriller X, produced by Circe Films, will start its four-week shoot at Kings Cross in Sydney on April 7.

Producer Lizzette Atkins of Circe Films told Encore that director John Hewitt will put together selected scenes for her to take to this year’s Cannes Film Festival, to attract interest from sales agents.

“Because we didn’t need a sales aent to complete the deal, we decided to wait.  Finding a sales agent with completed footage will increase the value of the film,” she said.

According to Atkins, the shoot will be mostly location-based, and done on the RED camera. She describes the project as “erotic, fearless, action packed and intensely psychological” and “unlike anything we’ve come to expect from contemporary Australian cinema”.

“It will appeal to a sort of European , art house audience. It’s very cast-driven and it’s got a lot of substance, and two very strong female leads,” she told Encore.

The screenplay written in conjunction was written by Hewitt and Belinda McClory. It is executive-produced by Peter Castaldi, who will distribute through his new company The Pack.

“We’re thinking of a limited release in Australia, but at the end of the day, you never know. It might be wider,” said Atkins.

X chronicles a chance encounter on the mean streets of Kings Cross that changes the course of two women’s lives. These women will be played by Viva Bianca (Spartacus) as elegant call girl Holly, and Hanna Mangan-Lawrence as fledgling hooker Shay.

The project has been financed through Screen Australia, Film Victoria, and private investment.
