David Penberthy to edit Sunday Mail

david penberthyNews Limited has appointed news.com.au’s editor-in-chief David Penberthy as editor of The Sunday Mail in Adelaide, replacing Megan Lloyd, who is leaving the company.

Penberthy is a former editor of The Daily Telegraph in Sydney.

The Adelaide-born Penberthy will begin his new role immediately. Luke McIlveen will remain editor of news.com.au, with the company choosing not to appoint a new editor-in-chief at news.com.au.

McIlveen will now report directly to News Limited editorial director Campbell Reid. 

News Limited CEO Kim Williams said Penberthy was one of the company’s true multi-media editors with a distinguished career in both print and digital media.

“David is one of our most exceptional journalistic talents and has had an outstanding career as a reporter, columnist and editor across all platforms,” Mr Williams said.

Penberthy a former editor of The Daily Telegraph in Sydney, said: “I am terrifically excited by this opportunity, and especially excited at being given the chance to edit both in my own hometown and the birthplace of our business,” Penberthy said.

“The Sunday Mail has been an integral part of life in South Australia for 100 years and is a much-loved brand. Along with The ‘Tiser, it is the paper I grew up with.”

Penberthy is a well known News Limited columnist who regularly writes across multiple News publications.

He joined The Daily Telegraph in Sydney in 1999 as NSW parliamentary bureau chief and was chief of staff in 2002 and 2003. He was appointed editor of The Daily Telegraph in 2005, and in 2008, was selected as founding editor of thepunch.com.au which launched in May 2009.

In 2011, he was appointed editor in chief of news.com.au.

The chief executive officer of News Limited, Kim Williams, today announced the appointment of David Penberthy as editor of the Sunday Mail, Adelaide.

Mr Penberthy, currently editor-in-chief of news.com.au, will commence his new role immediately.

Mr Williams said Mr Penberthy is one of the company’s true multi-media editors with a distinguished career in both print and digital media. He is also one of the country’s leading commentators whose opinion columns are published across News Limited’s Sunday mastheads.

“David is one of our most exceptional journalistic talents and has had an outstanding career as a reporter, columnist and editor across all platforms,” Mr Williams said.

“He has a demonstrated appreciation of the need and interests of our customers. This, combined with his creative, innovative vision makes him the ideal editor for the Sunday Mail. I am delighted he has accepted this position and that he has agreed to continue to pen his weekly column which is essential Sunday reading across the country.”

Mr Williams said the appointment of an editor of Mr Penberthy’s calibre was evidence of News Limited’s commitment to its Sunday newspaper network and its 5.8 million customers – the biggest single day media audience in Australia.

News Limited Editorial Director, Campbell Reid said in his new role Penberthy would step aside from his position as editor in chief of news.com.au but would play a senior role shaping both print and digital content on a national basis for the network of News Limited Sunday newspapers.

Penberthy joined News Limited in 1992 as a cadet journalist with The Advertiser in his hometown of Adelaide. He was Canberra correspondent for The Advertiser from 1996 to 1999.

He joined The Daily Telegraph in Sydney in 1999 as NSW parliamentary bureau chief and was chief of staff in 2002 and 2003. He was appointed editor of The Daily Telegraph in 2005, and in 2008, was selected as launch editor of thepunch.com.au.

In 2011, he was appointed editor in chief of news.com.au.

Mr Penberthy succeeds Megan Lloyd who has left the company. Mr Reid thanked Ms Lloyd for her significant contribution to News Limited.
