Michael Venus departs Nine News; replaced by Hugh Nailon

Nine has announced the resignation of its Melbourne news director Michael Venus.

In a short announcement, the TV network said:  

“The Nine Network announced today that Michael Venus, Channel 9 Melbourne’s News Director, has tendered his resignation, effectively immediately.

“Michael paid tribute to the talented people he has worked with over the past 27 years at GTV and wished the current team well for their move to Nine’s new Docklands Headquarters.

“Jeffrey Browne, Managing Director, Nine Network Australia, said that Michael Venus had made an enormous contribution to GTV9 and the Nine Network, over a long period of time.

“Michael’s professionalism, work ethic and news sense stand him tall amongst his peers and I wish him the very best for his future,” said Mr Browne.

4.45pm update: Nine has announced A Current Affair’s Hugh Nailon as successor.

It said:

Hugh Nailon, currently Melbourne Bureau Chief of A Current Affair, has been appointed News Director of GTV9 Melbourne.

As well as his time at A Current Affair, Nailon spent several successful years as a producer with 60 Minutes.

“Hugh is a first class journalist with an excellent track record of making great television,” Calvert said.

“This year he has shown superb leadership in steering A Current Affair Melbourne to a ratings win, and I have every confidence in his ability to lead the GTV9 news team.”
