Vice appoints Australia-New Zealand editor of female-focused site Broadly
Vice has appointed Rebecca Kamm as the Australia/New Zealand editor of its female-focused channel Broadly.

Broadly AU/NZ’s launch content will examine a range of topics – including abortion access in rural Australia and the significance of Maori women’s chin tattooing in contemporary society – through documentary video and written editorial.
However, the content will not be housed on a specific Australian channel but rather populate the existing US Broadly edition.
Kamm joins Vice after one year as the senior digital features producer for RNZ’s youth platform The Wireless.
Prior to that she was the editor of Fairfax New Zealand’s Sunday Magazine for two years and before that she was editor of NO magazine. She has also been a columnist for the New Zealand Herald.
On what she wants to achieve with Broadly in the next six to 12 months, Kamm said: “I would want to have a big portfolio of original reporting looking at stories that otherwise would have gone under the radar.”
Kamm joins Vice’s growing editorial team across Australia and New Zealand which is led by editorial director, Royce Akers.
Kamm told Mumbrella: “It will be original reporting and documentary film through a female lens and about women in Australia and New Zealand and that will enhance the pre-existing site. We will be part of the US site at least to begin win.
“Being a woman isn’t a niche, it is half our population. The idea is to look at topics through a female lens; so maybe the story will be directly related to the fact that someone is a woman – like reproductive rights – but then again maybe it won’t. It could simply be reconsidering an aspect of society that has thus far been reflected back at us by men. Or an incredible guitar player who happens to be a woman. It’s a balance, I think.
“Intelligent opinion is important, but women are already well-served in that genre. What we’re aiming for is a space to tell women’s stories in a way that is pure documentation, or as close as you can get to pure documentation, rather than telling people how to think. Women can make up their own minds.”
Broadly will also host a new video series Broadly Meets presented in partnership with U by Kotex with the first locally-produced episode featuring Tkay Maidza, followed by an episode starring model and activist Stefania Ferrario—both of which are hosted by Karina Utomo, lead singer of Melbourne band High Tension.

Kamm’s appointment follows on from a number of recent hires and promotions at at Vice Australia, with Julian Morgans taking over from Royce Akers as editor of Vice at the start of the year.
Other hires include former Vice intern Katherine Gillespie being named Vice mornings editor and editors of The Creators Project; with Ingrid Kesa, who began with Vice in 2015 as editor of The Creators Project taking on the role of managing editor of native and director Ramona Telecican moving into the role of senior producer, branded content.
In other news for Vice, deputy editor Maddison Connaughton was recently nominated for the Walkley Award for Young Australian journalist of the year.
