Fairfax Media is set to launch a new bi-annual magazine that will highlight events on Australia’s performing and visual arts calendar, as the publisher looks to grow its event with the same name.

Launching this Friday, Spectrum Magazine will be inserted in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age and in AFR Weekend.

The launch of Spectrum Magazine follows on from Fairfax managing director of life media and events Andrew McEvoy admitting the company had work to do in developing its Spectrum event.

Speaking at Mumbrella’s Publish conference in September, McEvoy said: “The arts for partners is a feel good category. We have tried Spectrum and it’s gone pretty well, we’ve got big audiences but we’re not there yet. We have not quite nailed it.

“But the arts category, entertainment, film, that is a category that we know is growing, that partners want to be involved with and that consumers can come at. That is the one I think can be great but it’s a complex category and we have not quite nailed it yet.”

Fairfax identified arts as a key area for the growth of its event division.

The 36-page semi-glossy magazine is edited by Spectrum Sydney editor Ardyn Bernoth and Spectrum Melbourne editor Lindy Percival.

Spectrum Magazine will include everything from classical music to blockbuster musicals and major theatre, opera, art exhibitions, ballet and dance productions.

Fairfax Media head of lifestyle and entertainment Monique Farmer said: “We are very excited to be launching the inaugural Spectrum Magazine in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review for Summer/Autumn 2016/2017.

“Inspired by the annual SMH and The Age Arts Guides, Spectrum Magazine leverages the respected Spectrum brand and is a premium, glossy magazine that our audience will hold on to as a valuable source of arts information and inspiration.”
