Cancer Council Victoria and Cancer Institute NSW urges young men to quit smoking

Cancer Council Victoria and Cancer Institute NSW have joined forces to urge young male smokers to quit making excuses and give up smoking for good.

The new campaign sees a young man head off to footy training with his friends while a voiceover says ‘I’ll quit smoking before footy training starts.’

As the man makes more promises to himself, such as quitting before his child is born, before he wakes up coughing, and before he has “serious problems,” the footage suggests he has not quit.

A voiceover at the end of the ad says “I wish I’d quit when I said” before a tagline says, ‘Quit Stalling – Quit today.’

The campaign was made by Three Wise Men and is the first since the agency was appointed to the account late last year.

It aims to give a positive message to push smokers to quit.

Amy Collie from Cancer Council Victoria said the concept resonated well in research with young males.

“They related to the notion of finding excuses to put off quitting but found this creative concept made them genuinely think about quitting now because they saw themselves in the life-stage scenarios,” Collie said.

Sarah McGill from the Cancer Institute NSW added: “Quit Stalling challenges young men to be honest with themselves about their quitting intention. It also reframes quitting as the strong and masculine thing to do.”
