Box office takings plummet as the industry prepares for cinema closures
Box office takings for the weekend leading up to Monday’s closure of cinemas were significantly down on the previous week, likely due to the push for Australians to self isolate and social distance amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Bloodshot, which took $1.4m across 346 screens for its first week of release, managed just $475,906 for week two across 341 screens – a decline of 66%.
The Invisible Man took $429,514 for week four of its release – a 60% drop from the previous week, while Sonic The Hedgehog netted just $161,360 for its sixth week, a 76% drop. The film took $668,376 last week and has a running total of $12.08m.
The Current War, a historical drama about the 19th-Century competition between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse over which electrical power delivery system would be used in the US took $146,525 for its first week of release across 209 screens.
The film was directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Edison, Michael Shannon as Westinghouse, Nicholas Hoult as Nikola Tesla, and Tom Holland as Samuel Insull.
I Still Believe took fifth place with $114,324 across 137 screens for its second week, followed by Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears with $50,673 for its fourth week.
Chal Mera Putt 2 held seventh with $47,912, followed by Bad Boys For Life with $40,306 and My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising in ninth with $39,273.
Birds of Prey rounded out the top 10 list, adding $38,782 to its running total which currently sits at $10.92m in the Australian box office.
