Slingshot wins Universal Sony media account

Slingshot has beaten Mediacom to the media account for the newly formed Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Australia.

The company follows the link up of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment to sell DVDs and Blu-Ray releases.

Slingshot was the incumbent for Sony while Mediacom had handled Universal. The closed pitch had been running since November. Slingshot’s does its buying through Aegis Media. Spend is likely to be $7m-9m.

Simon Rutherford, Slingshot Media Ventures’ CEO said: “We are absolutely delighted to be appointed to the Universal Sony business. It was an unusual process to have to go through. Both clients were happy with their agencies, yet there could only be one winner.”

He added: “Most agency structures are set up to spend a client’s money… not enough emphasis goes on leveraging all of their assets and making budgets work harder.”

Catherine Tan, strategy director at Universal Sony said: “It was a challenging process evaluating two outstanding agencies with markedly different cultures, client servicing models and media strategy, planning and buying philosophies. We awarded our business to Slingshot Media Ventures primarily because we felt they had a strong cultural fit and are better placed to leverage our content assets. Also, we believe that having a full service, nimble, big thinking agency with senior experienced resources working daily on our business is a smart decision in a year ahead of significant change.”
