News programs dominate amid Grenfell Tower disaster and Ten’s financial struggles

Television viewers’ main priority last night was tuning into news programs, as the Grenfell Tower blaze continued in London and more details of Ten’s financial collapse and a joint venture between Bruce Gordon and Lachlan Murdoch emerged.

No non-news programs managed to crack the 1m metro viewers mark, according to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings, and six of the top 10 programs of the night were news and current affairs shows.

The first half-hour of Seven News at 6pm was the most-watched program across the metro markets, with 1.171m tuning in. Its second half hour, which in some markets is a screening of Today Tonight, pulled 1.106m, making it the second most-watched program of the evening.

Nine’s news offerings were next on the ladder, with its first half hour pulling 1.010m and the 6:30pm session slipping slightly to 1.026m. Nine’s A Current Affair was fifth with 910,000.

Ten – which was itself very much the news of the day in the local market – had one show in the top 10. Masterchef placed sixth, making it the most-watched non-news program of the evening, and had 889,000 metro viewers. It was also the most-watched program across key advertising demographics 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Overall Nine won the evening with a 19.3% audience share, ahead of Nine’s 18.6%, Ten’s 14.1%, ABC’s 13.1% and SBS’ 4.9%.
