Marvel’s Black Panther collects more than $10m in first Australian weekend box office
The latest Marvel movie Black Panther dominated Australia’s weekend box office, with more than $10m in earnings, the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia reports.
Black Panther is the latest rendition of the Marvel Comics franchise, tells the story of an African Prince, who returns home following the death of his father to take the throne. But when an enemy suddenly appears, he must rally his allies and use the Black Panther strength to protect his people.
On its first weekend it made $10.525m on its first weekend, while in the US it collected US$192m in earnings.
The last Marvel film to enter Australian box office was Thor: Ragnarok, which soared to number one at the weekend box office with $10.931m.
Black Panther pulled in more viewers than the final film of the Fifty Shades series, Fifty Shades Freed, which made $2.341m on its second weekend at box office. Since it launched, it has made $10.862m.
Lady Bird, the story of a young outspoken teenager and her relationship with her mother, entered the weekend box office with $953,532 across 261 screens.
Meanwhile Hugh Jackman’s The Greatest Showman collected another $940,000 over the weekend across 336 screens, and Margot Robbie’s film I, Tonya collected more than $500,000
The films have earned $29.406m and $7.123m respectively.
