Origin Energy appoints M&C Saatchi to its creative account

Origin Energy has appointed M&C Saatchi to its creative account following a competitive pitch, Mumbrella can reveal.

The account will be serviced in Melbourne, with managing director Michael McEwan telling Mumbrella the partnership with Origin follows significant growth in the agency office.

“We are delighted to partner with Origin. They have a very important role to play in Australia. Every step of the way, we were impressed by the team they have built, their willingness to be open, the clarity of their thinking. It gave us great confidence entering into a partnership with Origin,” he said.

“2020 was a significant year of growth for M&C Saatchi Melbourne. We have assembled a wonderful team of people, strengthening existing partnerships while growing our business with a diverse group of new clients.”

The account was previously held by TBWA Melbourne, which chose not to take part in the pitch.

TBWA Melbourne CEO, Kimberlee Wells, told Mumbrella: “TBWA Melbourne enjoyed a great relationship with Origin Energy over the past five years. Whilst the partnership remains strong, we choose not to participate in the procurement process. We wish Origin every success with their new agency partner.”

Early last year, M&C Saatchi Melbourne bolstered its leadership team, hiring Mike Hyde as head of strategy and Jayne Brady as business and operations director. The appointments came around the same time as a leadership change at the top of the business, when chief strategy officer Justin Graham stepped into the CEO role following Leggett’s departure.

The Origin Energy win comes a month after the agency also picked up the creative account for World Vision Australia.

Origin Energy group manager of marketing and third party sales, Jeremy Weiss, said: “The energy sector is transforming, and we need the right strategic partner for the journey. M&C Saatchi really impressed us with their connection to Origin’s purpose and role as a great Australian brand. We loved their fresh approach to the work and we are excited for what lies ahead.”
