Mumbrellacast: Reconciliation week, sports streaming stings wallets, and Lisa Davies on AAP

On this week's Mumbrellacast, Cox Inall Ridgeway's Yatu Widders Hunt joins host, Calum Jaspan to discuss Reconciliation Week and representation in the media and marketing industry. Plus, Kalila Welch and Andrew Banks discuss the rising cost of streaming sports in a fragmented Australian market, and AAP CEO Lisa Davies chats about the new deal with Nine, and her time at the newswire service so far.

Cox Inall Ridgeway general manager, Yatu Widders Hunt joins the Mumbrellacast to discuss Reconciliation Week and its ‘Be Brave, Make Change’ theme. Widders Hunt speaks about the agency’s involvement in comms relating to First Nations People, including aiding brands such as JCDecaux to develop a Reconciliation Action Plan, representation in advertising and comms more generally, and how to engage during this week and beyond in celebrating and raising awareness around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.

Then, the team discusses the rising price of following sport in Australia, with recent price rises from both Optus Sport and Kayo, in an increasingly fragmented sports streaming market. The team also discusses the race for the AFL rights, which has seen Paramount (and Network Ten), and Amazon look to secure the rights to the largest Australian sporting contract from the start of the 2025 season.

Finally, AAP CEO, Lisa Davies joins the podcast to discuss her tenure at the rejuvenated newswire service so far, after joining this year. Davies also speaks about her involvement in securing a six-month contract with Nine’s newspapers last week, after she departed her role as editor of the Sydney Morning Herald in late 2021, the differences between running both news services, and her plans for the AAP going forward.
