Joker remains unbeatable as it nears $35m in Australian box office takings
Joker, the latest take on the DC Comics villain directed by Todd Phillips’ and starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character, remains unbeatable in the Australian box office, adding another $2.87m in takings to a running total of $32.64m.
The film is in its fourth week of release in Australia and showed across 316 screens, dropping 34% in its takings, but still holding the top spot for the week.
Joker beat out Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which took $1.8m for its second week, and Zombieland: Double Tap, taking $1.18m also for its second week. The films played across 386 and 289 screens respectively.
Maleficent has taken $5.03m overall and Zombieland $3.66m.
Hustlers landed in fourth place with a taking of $1.06m across 289 screens for its third week, adding to a running total of $6.76m. It was followed by Ride Like A Girl with $554,677 across 295 screens for its fifth week. The Australian film has taken a total of $8.98m in that time.
The highest-placing debut was Ready Or Not, which landed in sixth with $443,829 across 255 screens. The film, distributed by Fox, is a black comedy horror starring Samara Weaving as a newlywed who is hunter on her wedding night by her husband’s family. Mark O’Brien, Adam Brody, Henry Czerny and Andie MacDowell also star in the film.
It was followed by Bigil, an Indian Tamil-language action film about a football coach who seeks revenge for the death of his best friend. Bigil took $418,710 across just 32 screens for its first week.
Bigil sat just in front of Judy, the Renée Zellweger-led Judy Garland biopic, which took $364,953 across 60 screens for its second week. Indian comedy Housefull 4 took $294,788 across 54 screens for its first week in the Australian box office, putting it just above Gemini Man which landed in tenth position with $250,588 across 225 screens for a running total of $2.81m.
